SOUTH TUNISIAN TOUR

Your trip begins with the south-east region. Jebel Dahar, where we discover many Berber villages.
The best known as Matmata, Toujane and Chenini, but also beautiful ksour off the tourist routes. All these places bear witness to the rich cultural and historical past of this beautiful Berber region.

Your tour continues to the west, at the edge of the Chott El Jerid, they are the largest oasis producing dates "Deglet Nour", then we cross this salt lake to reach Tozeur and its Medina.

 

Even further west, in the mountains, not far from the Algerian border, springs spring and small oases offer their shade, Tamerza and its waterfalls, Midès and its canyons and finally the beautiful oasis of Chebika.

 

Your trip continues further south of these oases where the vegetation disappears and gives way to the Sahara.
As far as the eye can see, the dunes of the great Eastern Erg stretch, the sand is white towards Douz and becomes Ocher Safran towards Ksar Ghilane.

 

During your tour you can sleep in the Sahara either camp or camp.
The night under the starry sky of the desert is an unforgettable experience!

This region is really the ideal place for 4 × 4 tours as many places are not accessible for private cars.

 

Matmata
This village is renowned for its remarkable troglodyte dwellings which make it one of the top places of Tunisian tourism. Scenes from the movie Star Wars were shot there.

 

Douz.
Known as the "door of the Sahara". During Antiquity, it was the most important oasis in the region. Until recently, it was a stopping point for caravans during their travels between the Sahara and northern Tunisia.
In December the International Sahara Festival takes place there.

 

The Chott El Jerid.
Salt lake, nearly a hundred kilometers from East to West.
Chott El Jerid has no altitude below 15 meters, so it is above sea level, contrary to a widely held belief.

 

Tozeur.
Located northwest of Chott El Jerid, it is one of the oases located at the gateway to the Sahara Desert.
Tozeur is a city with an important religious past and known for its scholars.
This city is also a great producer of dates, 35,000 tons, of which 4,000 are from organic farming and two-thirds of the production is the variety Deglet Nour (Finger of God).

 

Tamerza.
It is in this region of mountain oases with waterfalls, that were shot some scenes of the film "The English Patient".

 

Midès.
Hanging on the edge of a canyon where there are fossils and colorful minerals. The new village of Midès is at the heart of the neighboring palm grove which provides dates, oranges and figs.
The site was used for certain scenes of the film "The English Patient and Fort Saganne".

 

Ksar Ghilane.
The southernmost of the Tunisian oases and one of the doors of the desert of the Tunisian Sahara, the oasis is fed by a source of hot water in which one can bathe and which would have thermal virtues.
This oasis serves as a refuge for fifty nomadic families living from the exploitation of date palm, goat and sheep farming.

 

Chenini
Very beautiful site and also the most visited located 18 km west of Tataouine, perched on a ridge. you will discover the troglodyte dwellings, built in the rock. Also a beautiful mosque of the XIII century rising between two ridges is also accessible to the visitor.

 

Guermassa
It will take a 4x4 to reach the old village of Guermessa, Berber village hanging on the hillside, unfortunately less preserved village than others.

 

Ksar Ouled Soltane
Ksar with 4 floors, Ouled Soltane is an Arab Ksar and not Berber, not fortified.
Made up of the most beautiful ghorfas on 4 floors of the region.

 

Ksar Haddada
5 km north of Ghomrassen, consists of 380 Ghorfa on one floor. He served as a backdrop for the movie "Star Wars" in 1999.
