French nationals only:

A visa is not required for a stay of less than or equal to three months, but a valid passport is required.

The valid national identity card, accompanied by the travel log issued by the agency, is tolerated for group travel. This tolerance is not always applied and travelers are exposed to a possible refusal to enter the territory. It is recommended that you travel with a passport.

Beyond three months, a visa and a residence permit must be obtained from the Ministry of the Interior. In case of irregular stay, the exit of the territory must be authorized by the Directorate of the borders and the foreigners and it is generally subordinated to the payment of a fine whose amount is proportional to the duration of overtaking noted.

French nationals who also hold Tunisian nationality (dual French-Tunisian nationals) must present:

A Tunisian passport valid at the entry and exit of Tunisia;

A valid French document (passport or national identity card) during the police formalities at the exit as during the return to France.

When embarking in Tunisia, airlines or shipping companies do not accept passengers without securities allowing them to enter French territory. It should be noted that, in accordance with French regulations, the Consulate General does not issue passes to travelers who have neglected to obtain French identity and travel documents prior to departure.

NB: The national identity cards issued between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2013 are still valid for 5 years after the expiry date indicated on the back, but no physical modification of the plastic card attests. Warning: This extension does not apply to cards issued to minors (the validity period remains 10 years).

Therefore, in order to avoid any inconvenience during your trip, you are strongly recommended to privilege the use of a valid passport rather than a CNIS carrying an expired date of validity, even if it is considered by the authorities as being still valid, especially for people traveling on shipping companies from Tunisia. Indeed, several cases of French nationals traveling on the shipping companies operating from Tunisia and who could not access the boat on presentation of the only CNIS have been reported.

If you only travel with your national identity card, you can download and print a multilingual notice explaining these rules at the following address: https://media.interieur.gouv.fr/interieur/cni-15ans/document-a -Download-tunisie.pdf

Minors' stay

In Tunisia, since November 2015 and the implementation of the organic law n ° 2015-46 of 23 November 2015 modifying the law n ° 75-40 of 14 May 1975 on passports and travel documents, the mother is authorized to traveling alone with your child. However, in practice this provision is applied restrictively. It benefits only mothers with Tunisian nationality traveling alone with a child of Tunisian father.

In addition to their Tunisian passport, it is strongly recommended to mothers of French families (not having the Tunisian nationality) moving in Tunisia accompanied by minor Franco-Tunisian children whose father has the Tunisian nationality, to bring themselves before their departure de France an authorization to leave the Tunisian national territory established by the father before the Tunisian consular authority in France. In the event of the father's presence in Tunisia, this authorization may be established on site at a municipality.

This authorization must be attached to the Tunisian passport of the child during the formalities of exit from the Tunisian territory to ensure the return to France of the child. This rule must be strictly observed, especially in the event of parental conflict.

In case the father refuses to establish this authorization, recourse to the local judicial way will be necessary. It is important to check on this occasion that the child is not the subject of a measure of prohibition of exit from the Tunisian territory at the request of the father. If necessary, the lifting of this prohibition must be requested at the same time as the judicial authorization to travel.

These provisions also apply to any adult accompanying children, including extended family members (grandparents, older siblings, etc.).
